The Importance of Remembering

Deuteronomy 6:4-18

We May Have Our Far-Flung Battle Lines, Dominion Over Palm And Pine
We May Have Our Navies, The Pomp Of Yesterday, Power And Boasting,
But The True Prayer Of Our Hearts Is Lord Of Hosts, Be With Us Yet,
Lest We Forget, Lest We Forget!!!
-- Recessional by Rudyard Kipling

The Bible speaks of the danger of God's people forgetting:

PSA. 59:11 "SLAY THEM NOT, LEST MY PEOPLE FORGET: SCATTER THEM BY THY POWER; AND BRING THEM DOWN, O LORD OUR SHIELD."

This refers to enemies that God rose up against David, so the people would remember God. God will raise up enemies so we will remember. God gives some other Scriptures that are warnings about forgetting Him.

(DEU 4:9) "ONLY TAKE HEED TO THYSELF, AND KEEP THY SOUL DILIGENTLY, LEST THOU FORGET THE THINGS WHICH THINE EYES HAVE SEEN, AND LEST THEY DEPART FROM THY HEART ALL THE DAYS OF THY LIFE: BUT TEACH THEM THY SONS, AND THY SONS' SONS;"

(PSA 106:13) "THEY SOON FORGAT HIS WORKS; THEY WAITED NOT FOR HIS COUNSEL:"

(PSA 106:21) "THEY FORGAT GOD THEIR SAVIOUR, WHICH HAD DONE GREAT THINGS IN EGYPT;"

There are some very powerful and frightful instructions in this passage of Scripture. In Deuteronomy 6, we have some things that we ought to remember. What are some things that we ought to remember?

I. Remember Our Requirements as A Child of God. Deut. 6:4-9

II. Remember Our Resources Come from God Deut. 6:10-11

III. Remember Our Redemption Is of God.

IV. Remember the Rewards for Serving God

V. REMEMBER HIS RETURN

We need reminders. When we get into the car, our buzzer tells us to fasten the seat belt. We all need reminders. Today we remember the freedom we have in this country because of the sacrifice that others made on our behalf. We also need to remember the sacrifice that God made in giving His Son, Jesus, to die on Calvary that we might have eternal life.
