The next few names that we will look at are all compound names with the name Jehovah. Each one will point to a particular aspect of the Lord. In this morning's passage we find the account of Abraham preparing to offer up the promised seed Isaac as a sacrifice unto God. And God provided a ram in the thicket just in time to deliver Isaac from certain death.
I. Jehovah-jireh is the name of the place.
A. They were on a mountain in the land of Moriah...note that God was directing Abraham all the way! v2
B. All we are told is that Abraham came to the place which God had told him. v3
C. This place was unnamed until the event happened.
II. This was the name to commemorate the event.
A. In v7-8 Isaac realized that something was missing.
B. They had no doubt gone to sacrifice and worship before, and Isaac saw that there was no lamb.
C. Abraham assured his son that God would provide himself a lamb for the offering.
D. God never fails! So they named the place Jehovah-jireh (the Lord will provide).
E. This place was where the Temple would be built. cf 2 Chron. 3:1
III. It is the name for the God who did provide, and continues to provide.
A. Jehovah = I AM
B. God in His self-existing power can and will provide exactly what we need, exactly when we need it
C. He is Jehovah-jireh!
